I have in the past made statements like, "I make things happen!" I felt so proud of myself, especially for my absolute determination and multitudes of accomplished goals. Sound familiar?
Unfortunately, even though our society highly prizes this sort of achievement-oriented mindset, the rewards never felt like enough. Even after checking off all the items on my To Do list, I continued to feel restless inside and so tired.
Eventually, I realized that I was deluding myself into thinking that the next challenge would make me feel happy, justified and fulfilled. But instead it just felt like a treadmill I could never get off.
On and on I went, never realizing I wasn't being powerful but was instead living my life through the sheer force of willpower. I was making everything about judgment, justification, and a feeling of righteousness or accomplishment.
What I've come to know now (thank goodness!) is that there is a HUGE difference between power and force. When I choose to approach my work from a place of love, self- compassion and a desire to inspire that is true power. My spirit is rejuvenated every time I take this approach! It is so much easier and so much healthier not to rely solely on my inner martial arts fighter to muscle through every challenge I face. And it's incredibly relieving not to feel the need to judge myself or anyone else according to a long list of "should's."
So, what about you? Is this a lesson you've learned perhaps, like me, the hard way? Learning to re-define your idea of personal power can open a world of joy, patience and gratitude that allows you to lead from a powerful intention of forgiveness, love and compassion. When you know and honor your true power source, you no longer have to struggle along the rough road of resistance by forcing an outcome. You can truly be a powerful individual, inspired by life and making a positive difference in the world.
